The Department of History was set up under the School of Social Sciences in 2014. The Department has designed its MA and PhD courses keeping in mind the diverse patterns of the past, focussing on the various possible ways of engaging with them. The courses illuminate different methodological approaches as well as key variables in understanding the past. Focussing on various genres of history—political, economic, social, cultural, intellectual—the syllabus seeks to provide students with a holistic understanding of the previous eras. Special emphasis is given on various issues of ‘local’ or ‘regional’ history, keeping in mind the setting of the university and the background of the students who come here to study. The syllabus also puts emphasis on the way ‘history’ as a discipline has evolved over the years, how the practice of ‘writing’ history has changed and how historians have negotiated with various theoretical formulations that have informed neighbouring disciplines. The courses also provide the students with tools to interpret not only the past, but the contemporary socio-economic and political configurations as well. History, as has often been pointed out, is a constant dialogue between the past and the present. The post-graduate course offers to make the students aware of the tremendous complexities of past issues as well as helps them to understand and analyse the contemporary world. Through the Mentor-Mentee Programme, individual faculty member is assigned to specific groups of students to assist them with specific queries and assignments.
The Department offers a two-year Masters course spanning
across four semesters and a Ph. D. course. At present there
are 36 research scholars working for the completion of their
theses on diverse themes. Regular excursions to places of
historical interest are conducted to give students a fair idea
about the importance of sites as sources. The departmental
teachers have taken an effort to gather books and articles
together to set up a departmental library so that the students
might have an easy access to books and articles related to
the themes discussed in their classes. The department
organises a monthly lecture series to expose students to
recent scholarship on various themes. The students of the
department are involved in extra-curricular activities. They
work towards the beautification of the campus and are
actively involved in sports. They have initiated a plantation
programme, obtaining the necessary permissions, collecting
saplings suitable for the campus and planting them. The
Department of History believes and works towards the
holistic development of each individual so that they might
contribute towards the building of a more egalitarian
society
