Prof. (Dr.) Rup Kumar Barman
Vice-Chancellor, Bankura University
It is a matter of immense
pleasure that destiny has allowed me to join Bankura University as its Vice-Chancellor. Bankura University (BKU) began its journey as per the Bankura University Act, 2013 [West
Bengal Act XIX of 2013 (published in the Kolkata Gazette, Extraordinary, January 6, 2014)]. The Government of West Bengal established
this state-aided university in the year 2014 to fulfil the greatly desired
aspirations of the people of Bankura District for promoting the advancement and
dissemination of higher education. Surrounded by
Hooghly, East Bardhaman, West Bardhaman, Purulia, Jhargram and West Medinipur
districts, Bankura University is located at the heart of Bankura District, historically known as Mallabhum (the land of Mallas or Wrestlers).
This university has inherited a glorious history of cultural,
artistic and intellectual achievements of Mallabhum including the cultivation
of science, technology, architecture, music, paintings, literature, textiles, terracotta products, martial arts and sports. Since its inception, Bankura
University has been committed to the dedicated task of disseminating higher
learning in this region and it promises to move into a glorious future by
promoting the study of folk cultural traditions and indigenous knowledge
systems for a sustainable future for all.
At present, Bankura University comprises of
four campuses situated at Purandarpur, Puabagan, Mithila and Chhandar in the district
of Bankura. Its administrative
offices are located within its main campus at Purandarpur (Beside NH 60, Block
II, Bankura, West Bengal-722155). Keeping up the pace with the new academic
developments of the twenty-first century, Bankura University has come forward
to open several Postgraduate Departments including professional courses. Besides
the undergraduate courses of different subjects of affiliated colleges, at
present, there are overall
15 PG Departments and 4 UG Departments (in Santali Vernacular) of different
broad disciplines including humanities, social sciences, science and Law.
Though our university is still in its initial stage, it could achieve the
recognition of the UGC (University Grants Commission, New Delhi) Act of 1956,
under Sections 2(f) and 12(B) of the UGC Act, 1956. It has also received
accreditation from the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) and
the Bar Council of India. Bankura University has been strictly following the
New Education Policy (NEP, 2020 and 2023) as per UGC guidelines. With a well-equipped
infrastructure, four academic campuses and 26 affiliating colleges (22
Government Aided Colleges, 2 Government Colleges and 2 Private Colleges),
Bankura University has already begun the process of materialising the
high ideals set before it. BKU will be shortly opening a few more Postgraduate
departments and Postgraduate Diploma courses. I hope that BKU will be a higher
academic institution of promise and social transformation. It is my earnest
appeal to all the alumni of BKU, scholars, students, teachers, officers, staffs,
and all other stakeholders to cooperate with us in the journey of transforming Bankura
University into a prominent centre for higher education.
All are welcome to the
portal of Bankura University!
