“Entangled: Takes on Trans- Today, in Literature and Culture”
Call for Papers

“Trans-”, a prefix of excess, unmake, radicality and new beginnings derived from Latin “trans” denoting “across”, signifies the urge to test, un-think, re-draw and finally, cross as also smudge boundaries and the conditions of confinement and exclusions they might represent. Contemporary realities and receptions come screened through technologies of speed, genres of emergency and the scream of loyalty to alleged singulars – of identities, icons, nationalities and market-brands. Trans-factors as bearer of alternative possibilities yet lurk, spill into, and re-form – discourses of the trans-/nation, as theorized by Bill Ashcroft, of translation, as contended by Harish Trivedi and Susan Basnett, and of disciplines and media, as proposed by Ranjan Ghosh.
To what extent do trans-factors like travel, exile, myriad socio-historical others mapped in matrices of language, gender, discipline, media, environment wounded around the developmental or, the human nudged to brink by machines and the viral, perform the unrest of imagined alterities? How to read trans- as a register in the context of open endings, or the politics of remembrance and forgetting, in literature, histories and popular culture? Would it write back to the sly compulsion of complicity in post-al discourses, could it become the Babel-hinge to forging difficult solidarities? If so, how?
This issue of Lyceum invites original research papers, also reviews of books and films on “Entangled: Takes on Trans- Today, in Literature and Culture” which may engage with, but may not be limited to, the following sub-themes:

ABOUT US

Lyceum

ISSN: 2582-3035

After a COVID-induced hiatus, Lyceum, the international open access online only e-journal of the Department of English, School of Literature, Language and Culture Studies, Bankura University, Bankura, West Bengal, India, is now being re-launched in an annual, peer-reviewed version in 2023.

Its debut volume having been launched in February 2018, Lyceum aims to publish original scholarly articles on interdisciplinary and emergent areas of research in the Humanities and Social Sciences, as also reviews of books and other cultural texts. All papers and articles will be subject to double blind peer review.

Meaningful contemporary research in South Asia in Humanities and the Social Sciences tends to smudge boundaries between disciplines and involves acts in translation. Lyceum intends to become an interdisciplinary portal for exciting and high-quality work from researchers across locations local and global and promote new critical-creative thought enabling conversations between locations. It would thus not only bridge research gaps in emergent domains of interdisciplinarity, but act as an interactive platform for academicians and students, readers and contributors for future collaborations and research possibilities connecting geographies and diverse perspectives. Through its articles and reviews, the journal hopes to create a perch for Bankura to speak and write to the world on domains of contemporary interest.

Issues will be theme based, highlighting recent trends in interdisciplinary research in the Humanities and Social Sciences.

The journal derives its name from Lyceum (Ancient Greek: Λύκειον, Lykeion) which was a temple dedicated to Apollo Lyceus or the wolf-god. The Lyceum in ancient Greece served as a site of philosophical discussions hosting such eminent philosophers and teachers as Prodicus of Ceos, Protagoras, Isocrates, Plato (of The Academy), Socrates, etc. More famously, The Lyceum is also the name of the Peripatetic school founded in 334 BCE by Aristotle on his return from Asia and continued by Theophrastus after Aristotle’s exile. We hope the journal title in translation in this tense and space continues the kindle of debates and creating-analysing habitats of diversity.
